Quantifeed was excited to be a part of the highly anticipated Hong Kong FinTech Week 2023 on the 30th of October 2023. The large-scale industry event was co-organised by the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau, Hong Kong Monetary Authority and Invest Hong Kong. Tens of thousands of global industry leaders, policymakers and FinTech innovators gathered to discuss the biggest opportunities in FinTech as well as key challenges faced in the region. Here are some of the major announcements and themes from the event.
1. Sustainable Finance in the Spotlight:
Sustainable finance garnered considerable attention during Hong Kong FinTech Week 2023. The event showcased Hong Kong’s pivotal role in sustainable investment, emphasizing ESG factors. Green bonds and responsible investing initiatives took center stage.
2. HKMA’s FinTech 2025 Strategy
The FinTech landscape is rapidly evolving, with both traditional banks and innovative startups embracing advanced technologies such as AI, blockchain, and big data. Collaboration between incumbents and disruptors was a recurring theme, demonstrating the mutual benefits of this digital evolution.
The HKMA FinTech roadmap sets out the initiatives over the next 12 months to further promote the wealthtech, insurtech, greentech, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and DLT.
3. Flourishing Virtual Banking and Cryptocurrency Trends:
Hong Kong’s virtual banking sector continues to thrive, offering innovative products and services. The city’s dynamic approach to cryptocurrency regulation was a highlight, reflecting our commitment to balancing innovation and financial stability.
4. Cross-Border Opportunities in the Greater Bay Area:
Hong Kong’s strategic location within the Greater Bay Area (GBA) was a prominent focus. The GBA initiative seeks to integrate Hong Kong, Macau, and mainland cities into a financial and innovation powerhouse. This presents exciting opportunities for FinTech companies in the region.
5. Talent Development and Regulatory Clarity:
FinTech’s growth relies on talent and regulations. Hong Kong FinTech Week featured discussions on talent development and upskilling programs, while regulatory updates provided transparency and guidance, fostering a favourable environment for innovation and business growth.
The HKMA committed to launching a series of initiatives such as Fintech Career Accelerator Scheme and the Industry Project Masters Network, to nurture local and global talents.
From sustainable finance to digital transformation, cross-border opportunities, and talent development, Hong Kong is cementing its status as a global FinTech hub. We look forward to the ongoing success of FinTech in our city and the promising developments on the horizon.
